20230318 Aefintyr What's Up Whitewater - Birds singing, Racoon, Robins, Squirrel ...

What's happening in the woods of Southeastern Minnesota? The snow has melted on the many southern slopes but is still several inches deep in shaded areas. Great time to observe the effects of albedo (light / radiation reflected by a surface) around tree bases and leaves that warm and melt the snow. Observed some great animal tracks. The warming and cooling has condensed the base of the snow and left a crusty layer that captures tracks well because the animal's feet don't sink in. Birds have begun to sing, especially in the mornings and the woodpeckers are drumming. The usual resident raccoons, squirrels and deer that visit the clearing continue to be active. Many Robins noted. A few green plants observed with some of the snow gone. Continuing to check on the leaf buds and practice winter tree identification. The spring Equinox is just around the corner. I love to watch where the sun rises and sets to see how things align east and west. This video is part of a series of phenology videos from the Whitewater River Valley in Southeastern Minnesota.
