20231118 Tips for a Great Meteor Shower Viewing Experience

November 18th, 2023. Meteor showers are a great opportunity to enjoy the wonders of the night sky and experience nature at night. There are several meteor showers that occur every year, some that recur annually and some that you may only have one chance in a lifetime to see. Meteors are small pieces of space rocks (asteroids or comets) the break off and enter the Earth's atmosphere. Meteor showers occur as the Earth passes through debris left by the space rock as it orbits around the sun. Meteors radiate from a point in the sky called the radiant and appear as a streak of light or a "shooting star" moving across the sky. Here are some things to consider when planning an outing to view meteors (or any anything else in the night sky!): What is the weather going to be like? Aefintyr observations week of June 5th 2022

I was down at Aefintyr every day this week and didn't go for a hike. I was still able to observe a few things. I was determined to finish the walls, ceiling and flooring in the first little cabin and needed to stay laser focused on that to make it happen. I have a new appreciation for the value in having skilled help for construction projects. I feel like a glutton for punishment, just can't quit thinking that it is a good idea to dyi. This week alone I've put in well over 30 hours. That's on top of my full time job and doesn't include prep or drive time which is easily another 1 to 2 hours a day. My husband keeps joking that I must have a side piece because I go there almost everyday and have been coming home later and later. It is true, I love the woods deeply and find that it renews my soul to be there. Aefintyr observations week of May 1st, 2022

Temps have been consistently above freezing at night. Loving the long days. Haven't looked at the sky much this winter. Noticed in the early night that the big dipper is almost on top of me and Orion is sinking into the horizon. Green is starting to appear most notably on the ground with the grasses and plants sprouting. A few shrubs have leaves. At the beginning of the week, the forest, from a distance still looks like fall and winter, mostly grey, brown and white. Towards the end of the week, specks of color appeared in the canopy. On Tuesday 5/3 I found anemone, blood root and wild ginger first time for the season. Some of the blood root's petals had fallen off. I bumped one and the petals fell off... fragile apparently! The hepatica is amazing and all over. Many shades of purple and white. I continue to hear woodpeckers drumming and the barred owl hoot. Turkeys too.
